Comics in the classroom

Opening new doors to reading.

For some students, traditional reading materials can feel more like an obligation than an invitation. Comics and graphic novels offer another way in.

By combining words and images, comics invite readers to follow stories, interpret visual information, make connections, and engage with language in different ways.

Through Comics in the Classroom, Escape Hatch Foundation is developing partnerships with schools and educators to bring carefully selected comics and graphic novels into classrooms.

Our initial efforts focus particularly on third- and fourth-grade students, with the goal of creating engaging classroom collections and supporting teachers interested in exploring the educational possibilities of graphic literature.

We believe the first step toward becoming a lifelong reader is discovering that reading can be a pleasure.

Library Collections & Community Access

Great stories should be within everyone’s reach.

Public libraries are among our most important partners in making reading accessible to everyone.

Escape Hatch Foundation is working to expand the availability of comics and graphic novels through partnerships with public libraries and community organizations.

Our goal is to help develop substantial, thoughtfully curated collections that readers can explore, borrow, and enjoy without having to purchase individual books.

By working within existing library systems, we hope to make these collections available not only to individual communities but also to readers throughout the region.

We believe that comics and graphic novels deserve a permanent place in the collections that serve our communities.

Outreach and community partnerships

Bringing stories into the community.

Not every reader discovers books in a classroom, library, or bookstore. Sometimes a chance encounter with the right story can open an unexpected door.

Escape Hatch Foundation works with local businesses, community organizations, and volunteers to create new opportunities for people to discover the pleasure of reading.

Our outreach efforts include supporting community-based comics displays, developing new partnerships that expand access to reading materials, and helping organize events that celebrate books, storytelling, and literacy.

One such initiative is the Monadnock Comics and Literacy Fest, a developing community celebration bringing together readers, creators, educators, and families.

We are also exploring opportunities to bring reading materials to people who face additional barriers to access.

Whether through a school, a community gathering, or an unexpected encounter with a comic book, our goal remains the same: to help more people discover stories they love.
